Araneus diadematus Clerck, 1757 – European garden spider, Diadem spider, Cross spider, Crowned Orb-weaver

Occurrence: Araneus diadematus is the best known and most abundant Orb-weaver occurring almost everywhere (meadows, forests, fields, gardens, buildings, fences, ...). We often find the spiders close to each other. Description: Its ovoid abdomen can be colored from yellow to brown. It has mottled white markings forming a cross. Adult females can grow to about 18 mm. Period of occurrence: The juveniles occur throughout the year. The adults are common from July to October. Web: Araneus diadematus builds its big dense and strong web almost everywhere, high or low to the ground. Mostly spider attacks the prey not immediately. It depends on its physical activity. The signal thread is connected with a nest (e. g. between the branches of conifers, from twisted leaves or in a hole in the fence). Sometimes the nest can miss. The spider often sits on the central area of its web, especially on sunny days. Food: It hunts flies, wasps, bees and butterflies.
